Self-Care Tips

Self-Care Tips

I’m going to start off by saying something that I think is really important: I know that these tips aren’t going to fix anyone’s problems. Depression and anxiety don’t get fixed by a bubble bath and the blow of losing your job won’t be softened by treating yourself to some sushi one night.

These tips are simply reminders to do something for yourself once in a while because life can get hard and overwhelming and it’s easy to forget about things that make you feel less overwhelmed.  I am currently hunkered down during a snow storm and I am likely going to practice a bit of self-care this weekend. It was a long week at work and I’m ready to wind down.

Have a long bath/shower

I know I just said this won’t fix your problems but I promise you, you’ll feel at least a fraction of a percent better when you get out. Wash your hair, do a hair mask, shave your legs, use your favourite scent of shower gel, take a bath bomb in with you. Whatever you like to do, do it, and you’ll smell really good after. Plus, if you need to have a good cry, the shower is a really good place.

Eat something

Yes, I’m aware that this isn’t a self care tip, it’s necessary for life, however, too many people treat food as a necessity and not a luxury. Make yourself something that you will actually enjoy eating. If you don’t want to cook, order in your favourite takeout and treat your meal like an experience rather than something you have to do in 5 free minute of your day

Stretch

Take some time to stretch your muscles. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or intricate. Just do some toe touches, stretch out your hamstrings and your back. Chances are you’ve been sitting at a desk all day and your hamstrings are tight af. Let them loose.

Go for a walk

If you enjoy nature, pick a time when the weather is to your liking and go for a stroll. If you want to be distraction free, leave your phone at home and truly disconnect. Or, if you prefer some music along the way, bring your phone and throw on some tunes.

Eat some junk and don’t feel guilty

If you’ve had a hard day and you want to come home to a pint of Ben and Jerry’s, just eat it. Eat it and don’t beat yourself up about it.

Write it out

Journalling can be very therapeutic, especially if you find yourself alone and don’t have any friends to share your troubles with.

Light a candle and cozy up with a book

Reading is relaxing and beneficial for the mind. Reading is a great way to stimulate your mind and it can really transport you out of your real life and into a fantasy world where your problems don’t exist. The candle is just because it’s cozy and smells nice. If you don’t like candles (like me because I’m scared I’m going to burn the house down).

Get your haircut

This is something that costs a bit of money but it can also really make you feel great. Going in and getting your hair washed and trimmed can make you feel great about yourself and your appearance, you’ll feel so refreshed once you leave.

Make your bed

Very simple but very effective. It makes your room look clean even if it isn’t. Even the illusion of clean is better than nothing.

Paint your nails

Painting your nails can just make you feel a little more put together and pampered.

As always, thank you so much for reading my blog. I hope some of these tips were useful for you. If you enjoyed the post please subscribe and if you would like to tell me what you do in terms of self-care please let me know in the comments!
