We all know we should drink more water. It’s been one of my goals for years and I’ve never been able to achieve the 64 ounces that is recommended. I drink a lot of coffee which negatively affects my water drinking in the morning because I would rather sit and have a cup of coffee in the morning when I wake up. These are some of the ways I have found help me to drink more water.
Pick the Right Water Bottle
The biggest thing that I’ve learned is that you need to figure out what kind of water bottle works for you. For me, I love drinking out of a ‘water bottle’ with a straw. I but it in quotations because it’s less like a water bottle and more like a cup. I have one of those huge Starbucks cups that holds 700 ml of water. It’s steel so it’s super durable and I honestly love it so much. It also keeps my water super cold.
There are so many other types of bottles you can drink out of though and I can guarantee that some will promote you to drink more water than others. You could try a swell bottle (for me this is too much work to unscrew the cap every time I want a drink), a gatorade bottle that you can just squirt into your mouth, or a shaker bottle that you can guzzle water out of quickly because of the large opening at the top. There are also the cups with straws I talked about or there are water bottles that come with straws inside them and kind of look like a sippy cup at the top. There is also the option of just filling a mug or water glass with water and downing that but that is a lot less portable so a bottle might be a better way to go for many people.
This is one that might not work for everyone but you could set reminders on your phone that can prompt you to pick up your water and take a few sips. Eventually, it will probably just become a habit.
Add some Flavour
For some people, water is boring. If you want to make it more interesting, try adding some flavouring- artificial or real. You can get a water bottle with an infuser and add some berries or you could just get some of the flavouring you squirt into the bottle. I don’t necessarily condone adding the artificial flavouring but if it’s getting you to drink more water it’s worth it.
Try to drink a glass with every meal
Drinking water while you are eating tends to be easier than just drinking it by itself. If you consistently have a glass with each meal, you will be well on your way to meeting the healthy minimum for the day. Trying to drink one glass at a time may seem more manageable than an entire water bottle sitting in front of you. Breaking it down into smaller portions can really help with the mental aspect of it. It suddenly seems a lot easier.
Ask Someone to Remind you
You could ask your spouse, a friend, or a coworker to help you reach your water intake goal. It would be a great chance for them to improve their water drinking as well!
Personally, the thing that has helped me the most is finding a water bottle that I love. I have read many things that state drinking from a straw promotes more water intake and I have experienced that first hand!
